At Least One Novelty in the New Year

If you are one of those who like to prepare a list objectives for the new year, how about adding at least one goal of novelty to this year’s list to do? Yes, not adding a new goal, but an innovation goal…

I mean a real novelty … To invent something even if it is small, to make an invention even it is absurd, to develop a new social project that will solve a problem, or to write a poem…

Would not it be good to strengthen your creativity muscles in the new year? Just like feeling pain when we use our muscles that have not been used before for the first time, naturally for those who are not used to using their creativity potential, it may be difficult at the beginning. No problem. These are signs of your muscles’ working, and the muscles get stronger as they work; the pain will ease and stop over time.

If you are someone with goals, you would know that you need to focus and make a great effort to reach your goals. Then why shall we avoid trying to make an innovation? I must also mention that trying to create something can be much more enjoyable than striving to achieve many other goals.

Why do I want it?

Because I want our next generations to have the skills to do new things, not to repeat the old-school works. I want that we should raise individuals who are versatile, open-minded, self-confident, productive and who have aesthetic concern and the sense of social responsibility.

Then I suggest starting with ourselves. Let’s be good role models for our children. Let’s provide them with useful habits and a cultural environment which is favorable for innovation. Let us become a part of transformation instead of expecting a social transformation.

How to start?

There are many ways to achieve this; you will see it once you quest for it. It starts as soon as we step out of our comfort zone and question some of our assumptions. Let’s take control of our ego and inertia.

Edward de Bono, the world’s most famous creative thinking consultant, says that “The boundaries of rationality has been drawn by our experiences. You will not be able to change as long as you stay within these boundaries. Think different. Provoke your ideas. Provoke them to create original things. The original ideas do not emerge unless you provoke them”.

Let’s quit some habitual patterns and make a room for innovations

Sometimes we need to consent to destroy the present to create the better. Then comes the uncertainty and the chaos. A new model emerges from the chaos. If we get attuned and move with “chaos” instead of avoiding it, it leads up new and useful models.

We do use our creativity muscles in one way or another, but we are not aware of it. Or we could not yet enjoy the pleasure of using them consciously and systematically. We have very bright ideas, but we neglect them; we hesitate to put them into use for solutions, or writing them down on a piece of paper, or making a model of them, or discussing and selling them.

How about a bit more courage in 2017?  Let’s move to be conscious-innovative individuals. At least, let’s pretend to be like that. Maybe we can do it; we can be as one by practicing it. We may well get rid of rote learning.

Let’s not allow the negativities that discourage us. Let’s shut our ears to our inner and external interferences. We should be open to constructive feedback to improve our innovation though.

No one expects you to turn into a Picasso, Elon Musk or Einstein on the first day. You never need to be someone else anyway. Just allow yourself to be only you. Because you are the unique opponent of yourself.
