Did you know the Lina’s secret of success?
Lina is smart. Be like Lina.
Last week when I was on a return trip, I watched a video on Lina Wertmüller‘s life on the plane. Born in 1928, this Italian screenwriter and film director became the first female director to be nominated for an Academy Award for her exceptional films about the lives of the poor in the south.
Lina narrated herself for the most part of the documentary. With her white glasses, prankster and playful attitude, it is obvious that she was a rebellious personality.
Her career began with comic strips, to which she was glued during her childhood. She acted for 10 years. She was chosen as the assistant of the world-famous director Federico Fellini in 1962, and this became a milestone in her life. In 1963, with Lina, Fellini shot the movie “8,5“, two Academy Award-winner and one of the top 10 best-ever films in the world for image and sound.
The following year Lina sat on the director’s seat herself, with the film “The Lizards.” In this part of the documentary, Lina tells a conversation with Federico Fellini in a grateful manner. “Lina, I’ve heard that you’ve started directing, I wish you success. There will be some people telling you “do this, do that.” But don’t mind them. You just tell your story, don’t worry about the rest.” Fellini had told her.
“At that moment, I just figured out the secret,” says Lina “and I focused on my stories.” What happened next: An international career filled with success in a male-dominated sector followed.
If you like documentary or if movie is among your interests, I suggest you watch this biography. The personality of Lina Wertmüller and her experience offer many clues about her success in business and the codes of creativity.
Lina is smart.
Lina went after her dreams and her passion. She never said “it is late” and at the age of 34, she had the courage to change her career.
She didn’t act like a know-it-all, and took heed of Fellini’s wisdom.
She understood the power of “a good story” and focused on being a good storyteller.
She was not afraid of being different and trying different things. She showed courage to work with fameless actors/actresses. She discovered their strong sides and polished these in her movies. And this was one of the keys to her success.
When she worked with famous actors/actresses, she did extraordinary work by discovering their unknown features that even they didn’t know.
Since she didn’t hook on patterns; she always said “why not” instead of “no.”
She sprinkled her sense of humor rooting from her childhood on every work. She took advantage of her own natural power.
She was never drunk with success. She was wise enough to see that success is the enemy of the next possibilities of success.
She cared the viewers’ reactions to her work and started every next work with this awareness.
Be like Lina.
